2020 gift to self – Happy New Year

We all like to gift the best to oneself……I sometime do that by eating my favorite ice cream, cooking a favorite dish for my son…yes we feel gifted doing for people we love the most…some times reading one page from a favorite book, a veces putting my leg out of the balcony with my little one and sipping tea while the rain sprinkles our feet…..aaahhh…small moments matters.

A couple of invitations from family and friends for the new year’s Eve kept me thinking where to head….finally decided with family……..too much pressure 😃

Yet, the strong Aries quality in me made sure to do my solo ride to welcome 2020 in style…..After the late night dinner, I as usual was ready by 6 and headed off to Shoolagiri dam.

The weather was at it’s best and Sun decided to be a bit lazy in showing up as clouds over powered them….so the chill in air was fresh making it a good ride……

Completely unexpected was a bit of off roading for about 5 kilometers….not a good one for car travel…….I went slow to the unknown roads between a couple of villages.,…..

Almost close to the dam, I met a couple on Dominar………we talked, did some photos, I breathed fresh air….ahhh my bike as well cleaned itself with the freshness in air……I loved the gift to self…….185 kilometers to begin…

Happy New Year folks….so what gift did you give your self…..???

Chettinad Tale

Hello Folks,

A comeback after break always carries a good feeling. Here is a short tale from my recent travel experience. Yet another bag packing travel story from Southern tip of India. After two day trip to Kochi (I am yet to write about it), little did I know what was in store at Karaikudi, where I was supposed to have a business meeting. These sudden meetings have been slightly arduous yet full of surprises.

Since I sometimes end up overthinking, that provokes anxiety only to later result in overwhelming experience or a fruitful event or travel. Chettinad experience was one such travel, which I thought was purely professional. Alighting train at Madurai and travelling by road was a better option rather to have multiple break journeys in train. With luggage more than usual and sweat tripping, I was only waiting to rush to my accommodation and have a quick shower to cleanse body and mind.

The Landmark – Chettinad Palace

Silence to the core mid-day

This is one another time, I booked a hostel. Chettinad Packers, did have good reviews and true to the fact, the very slight impressed me. Reaching this place, which was a little away was held an unplanned surprise to self. Though usually I check the destination and hotel, sometimes, I am drawn to other factors in accommodations. Just about 5 minutes from the hostel was this magnificent building that seemed very familiar. It took less than a minute for me realize that this mansion was home to either villans or hero in Tamil movies. Remember seeing them in one of the travel stories in YouTube. This was for sure a part of my passive bucket list.

I was very pleased with the room for it was spic and span, taking care of basic needs. The manager(Akash) also managed to help me with a bike taking into account my urgent requirement to attend meeting. While speeding in the smooth roads, I realized that this quaint village for sure did not have the word “traffic” in it’s dictionary. How peaceful can riding be…..while I was trying to sway until my destination arrived.

Though, I did get lost in a deserted path for about 5 kilometers…a big thank you to google maps…not a soul all through the uneven patch……it was perfect offroading experience…before connecting the high way. Nevertheless, my return was careful and smoother.

Lunch time, all thoughts got drawn to chettinad cuisine…. specially mutton the traditional way. I chose meal over biryani. After a hearty meal, Akash accompanied me to one of the Chettiar’s palace and showed me around. There is nominal charge of Rs.50/- and receipt is given for the same. These funds collected go to the caretakers expenses.

As I entered the mansion, I see a long rectangular hallway with two major entrances and I was warned not to take photographs since the owner is not keen on this place being posted on social media. For sure the hall was a place to be shot, as it had an array of long standing cupboards with mirrors, tall pillars, corridors and impeccable architecture.

Proceeding further, we were greeted by the caretaker, who had a welcoming smile on her face. This where my photo shoot started…..the next room was a hall with broad seating both sides edged by long pillars made of single wood along with a open roof courtyard at the center. One can walk through both side to reach the wash area and then to kitchen. It was massive, more than what one could imagine by just looking at the house from its main entrance.

There were few bedrooms at the ground floor, yet most of them were at the first floor. I learnt there were more than 40 bedrooms in the mansion. They were all locked and I could barely get a sight of it. The dark and narrow staircase alongside Yellow painted walls led us to the roof of the building to give the best view of the quaint town. It was a u-turn to history.

Hope you enjoyed reading this piece of hidden history. To be back soon…Luv Vannie

Singapore …….not always a good experience

Listen up….those who wanna make a difference! I believe I am one of them.

I am sharing a recent incident that a known family experienced during their recent visit to Singapore between the 11th and 16th of April 2019.

It is been observed and sadly to say, experienced that people(judged by country of origin or ethnicity or race) are treated indifferently at many places in Singapore, especially at touristy spots; be it train stations or zoo ticket counter.

While this family lined up at Orchard Road train station, a lady in a scarf(name not visible) greeted people ahead of them with a smile that seemed nice until their turn came; when the lady suddenly turned cold, in a sense showcasing attitude not friendly at all in any means but it did not mean she was loud. Her change in tone and gesture spoke out the indifference that was purely not welcomed.

Apparently, over the next few days of their stay, it came to their attention that the “White Skinned” were the ones were courteously treated. It was a common occurrence observed, and this is been the very attitude to most Asians or the Brown or Dark Skinned……

Truly shocking to hear an incident from one of the most touristy places. Why?

(1) Not expected and a “supposed to be” behavior

(2) Despite the fact I never visited Singapore…..I have been to other Asian countries ….where not even at once during my stint of more than 15 days I had a bad experience like this. The people were very warm unlike in Singapore.

(3) Unexpected attitude from Singapore who set an example to be one of best countries…….But is it really? I wonder now……What kind of memory will a visitor take away……??? Truly shameful and hurting.

So, to this lady out and others who have the same attitude…..CHANGE.

To the local authorities and the government…… PLEASE TRAIN/TEACH THEM

……..With a hope someone carries my message………

A sea of clouds, near Bangalore city

Every city comes with some sought of an advantage. The moment….a place becomes “city”, it is overcrowded or at the least moderately crowded. And this means weekends are the only time off the bustling crowd, either tucked away at corner in the house or to some place that is at a short driving distance.

For “Bangloreans”, Chikmangalur is a privilege. Not far away, yet throwing various options, be it lazing at a resort, engaging in adventure activities, soaking in early morning sun, trekking or submitting oneself to almighty at one of the popular temples, this place has it all.

This was a quick click on my way back in the early hours.

A slice of Horanadu

I have been doing a sort of intense travel since December. Despite being a travelaholic, these travel came unexpectedly and not pre-planned. I did a bit of beaches and religious places.

Last week, I happened to visit Horanadu in Karnataka (never heard of this place before until I decided to travel few days ago). The only way to access the place was via road. Contrary to most other times where I do scribble about the place, things around home kept me held up for this activity, being rest assured of some sought of adventure and I was not disappointed.

It’s was only on my return through the curvy ghats, which houses coffee and tea plantation, spaciously private houses engulfed by herbs and flowering plants, creeping black peppers and laid back locals; I realized it was heaven tucked away amidst mountains. It seemed like spring but not even a single feel of summer in air for 40 odd kilometers.

Travelling by the state bus was real adventure as the driver did all he could to sway the passengers from one corner to other, while speeding through bends of the mountain. Not wanting to miss on hidden beauty, I pulled out my instant camera and captured few shots whilst on the move.
